Obama gave a press conference today in the midst of numerous major disasters and conflagrations around the world and at home. Here's crazy Andrew Malcolm's take, along with the text. Malcolm's actually not too far off into Loony-Anti-Lefty-Land. It's an interesting read.
"First and foremost, our thoughts and our prayers are with the people of Japan."
First and foremost, Obama needs to give another press conference about that tomorrow. The Japan situation is far worse than initially thought. What are they going to do? It just goes to show - be careful with nuclear energy. Earthquakes are to Japan what shamelessly irresponsible hearings are to Peter King. Maybe a country that can have 8.9 earthquakes shouldn't have nuclear-friggin'-power plants?
"First, we need to continue to boost domestic production of oil and gas. Last year, American oil production reached its highest level since 2003. Let me repeat that. Our oil production reached its highest level in seven years. Oil production from federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico reached an all-time high. For the first time in more than a decade, imports accounted for less than half of what we consumed."
Okay, so Obama's a little redundant with the word "first." But his point, one that Malcolm conspicuously doesn't directly argue, is that we are producing more and still it has little effect on prices - even futures. And "futures" is the key word here. Petroleum is a globally traded commodity. We don't produce nearly enough to be independent of that market, and couldn't if we tried. Here's a good site for learning about oil. Think about it - how the heck are we going to change this reality?
"Going back to the Qaddafi question, as I said before, it is in the United States’ interest and the interest of the people of Libya that Qaddafi leave. And we are going to do a -- we’re going to take a wide range of actions to try to bring about that outcome. When you say is it ever acceptable, I think what you’re asking is are we going to do -- engage in any potential military action to make that happen. And as I’ve said before, when it comes to U.S. military actions, whether it’s a no-fly zone or other options, you’ve got to balance costs versus benefits. And I don’t take those decisions lightly."
Speaking of giving that press conference tomorrow... and speaking of oil and "futures"... Libya is now a hot situation. Germany is reluctant, but France and Britain seem ready to act. Are we? We all need to know this now.
"If Republicans are interested in social issues that they want to promote, they should put a bill on the floor of the House and promote it, have an up or down vote, send it over to the Senate. But don’t try to use the budget as a way to promote a political or ideological agenda."
This is Obamanese for 'don't pull a Wisconsin on me.' The Republicans are going to have to find a constitutional way of destroying the country.
