There's a very good reason the Korean War is known as the "Forgotten War:" it was a bloody, miserable affair, that shook the American mind to the stem. By the end of the war, the great General MacArthur's name was reduced to that of a conspiratorial quack, and the Red Scare spread like a mental plague. Eisenhower went from boring, Pre-9/11 Bushesque, to hero of rational leadership, only to spend the rest of his presidency in popular decline for engaging in that stupid Scare.
All that aside, the horror of the Korean War, for those who haven't "Forgotten" it, should inform us that another war like that would definitely not be a good idea.
But what if we have no choice?
We can't let South Korea fall to the North. There. I, Jersey McJones, liberal and progressive to the core, Jersey McJones, firmly assert that We, the American People, can not let the North Korea destroy South Korea. This isn't about the DPRK and the RoK. This isn't about partisan politics. This is about a commitment We made to these people 60 years ago that We must keep today.
Back in the early 1950's, before the "Domino" theory," before McCarthy'ism,' American soldiers were attacked by North Korean soldiers. It was as simple as that, as far as we were concerned. It was far worse as far as the South Koreans were concerned. Then a half-million Chinese soldiers came (understandably) pouring over the border, and all hell broke loose. We were defending ourselves, and defending these foreign people not so much from each other, but from other great powers. Unfortunately for the people of Korea, they were at an epicenter of the not-so-Cold War, and remain so today, so to speak. We owe South Korea, at the very least, our full military support today. In my opinion, we should pull out of the entire rest of the world to do it, if need be.
Here's the problem. Though no longer is Russia such a frightening concern, China has exponentially grown since the old days of revolution, and could pose far greater a threat today than would've both they and Russia combined, 60 years ago. I think the Chinese government is quite intelligent, competent, and rational. I think they can find a way to bring this to a relatively happy conclusion. I'm more than a little worried, though. I do not like the way this playing out.
I sincerely hope the Chinese will play a positive role in this miserable affair - before it becomes any bloodier. Frankly, I wish the Chinese government would take the DPRK down for once and for all. I don't care what they replace it with. Whatever it is, it would be better than what we have now. A fucking muskrat could run a country better.

10 Blistering Critiques:
I'm for once in total agreement with you.
The North needs to be dismantled and aid from China, S Korea and the US used to industrialize these poor people to some meaningful concept of life.
This little asswipe, "Un" whos probably been playing video games and jacking off to American porn his whole 22 years is supposed to be succesor ?
The last thing the Chinese want is a few miilion refugees storming their border.
Matbe if we just nuke the whole north the chinese will forgive our debt for helping them asvoid the incredible humanitarian costs involved in recieving all those refugees.
After all, something like 75% of their food and oil is coming fron China.
And then theres the nukes sales to god knows who.
A serious has to made and not one with 6 parties at a table
Well, at least China is finally showing some potential interest in taking a more proactive - and less enabling - role with regards to North Korea. Nuclear war is clearly out of the question. China would not stand for it, and the last thing we need is another serious clash with China. The last time we did that, it was a horrific affair. Waking that sleeping giant up with a nuclear blast on its border is the last thing anyone wants. Waking them up to taking a serious and mature position at the table of world powers would be a great way to bring this matter to an end, and bring China into the modern, developed world. I mean, damn man, when are they finally going to start allowing for growth? When are we finally going to be able to sell them something for a change?
China's positive rise would be good for everyone - and kill two bad birds with one stone.

When is president BH Chamberlain going to negotiate with them I wonder?
" and less enabling - role with regards to North Korea."
How ?
What goodies have they taken or ultimatums offered ?
Everytime the North gets a boner they kick things up a notch.
At what point they get bitch slapped regardless of Chinas feelings ?
Who are they selling this nuke crap to, whos teaching them how to use it, and whos supplying it ?
We all know they've sold materials to Iran and Syria.
I believe materials are coming from China only because they seem to have the best alliance and motive.
We gotta start making our own shit at home already and balance trade. That goes for South Korea as well.
We buy the majority of their shit while still covering their asses.
Go ahead S. Korea, bust out the ass whooping, we'll back you.
On the other hand the North could well collapse on its own if REAL sanctions were applied and subsidies blown up before they arrive
Well, Micky, either I have pull with the Chinese government, or they see this as I do. Sure enough, news is now that China has about had it with the DPRK and may amenable to a reuinited Korea - under the auspices of the South!
The impetus for China here is clear. North Korea is an economic and geopolitical black hole - useless for trade, useless for foreign policy. A united Korea - as a democratic, capitalistic state - would be valuable trading partner. The "spoiled child," the aristo-communo-klepto-martial-totalitarian North Korean government, may finally be looking at it's last days
Meanwhile, Lisa, "Chamberbama" has mobilized the navy off the Korean peninsula. So much for "negotiate," huh?

Well, like I said in the beginning;
"The North needs to be dismantled from China, S Korea and the US used to industrialize these poor people to some meaningful concept of life."
I'm sure Chinas getting a lot tired of the moochers but at the same time doesnt want the flood of refugees
Introducing these sheltered folks to a free industralized society is going to be quite a task
Sadly, after pondering, I dont think anything substantial will take place until the North collapses and begins firing on its own
That's a very poignant remark,
Micky.

Well, the present and past actions have lead me thoughts of lesser hope
If I dont get around to it in time...
Merry Christmas dude.
Lot on my plate this year, lotta drunks
